Why Bikes Are Magic
I believe bikes are magic.
Not in the card-trick or wizardry sense, but in the way they transform the way we feel, the way we connect, and even the way we see the world.
I believe bikes make people happy and healthy. Even a simple ride can change how someone feels and how they think about the world and their place in it. And I’ve seen it. In myself, in friends, in strangers. Grinning ear-to-ear like a happy kid starting summer break. That magic feeling of almost flying. It’s universal. It never gets old. It never goes away. I believe bikes are magic.
The Magic of Movement
There’s something special about the rhythm of pedaling, the wind on your face, the steady hum of tires rolling. It’s movement that doesn’t feel like work. It doesn’t take energy. It gives energy. It gives clarity & calm. Some days I ride to train. Most days, I ride because it makes me feel special. Makes me feel magic. If there’s a better word, I’ll use it. I just haven’t found it yet. Bikes are magic.
The Magic of Perspective
Bikes let us see the world differently. A mountain trail at “olden hour”, a gravel road that winds into the unknown, or even a paved path taken at just above a walking pace. All of these shift perspective. On a bike, the world feels bigger and smaller at the same time: wide open to explore, yet deeply connected in the details you notice.
The Magic of Community
Bikes bring people together. I have friends that started solely from bikes. I have friendships that have grown from long climbs & rides. I have gotten (and given) encouragement after tough falls. I enjoyed stories and laughter that have wiped away aches that I didn’t even know I was carrying (physical and otherwise). The biking community is one of the most generous and welcoming I’ve ever known.
Any body. Any bike.
The Magic of Resilience
Riding isn’t always easy. That’s part of the magic. The moments of struggle, mechanical issues, the steep hills, the mud, the weather. They all help teach patience, grit, and joy in the journey. Every ride has a lesson, even if the lesson is simply “we showed up.”
At the end of the day, I love bikes. When we get on a bike, whether our first ride in 20 years or our 200th ride of the season, I know we’ll get a taste of that magic.
And that’s why, for me, bikes will always be more than just bikes. #bikesaremagic
